Update on the proposal to set up a community benefit society

On Friday 7th October, five members of the FROTH steering group (Andy, Peter, Amanda, Mandy and David) met with an advisor from The Guild, a Norwich-based organisation which specialises in business support for community enterprises and the like.

They are funded by the Co-Op Enterprise Hub to support groups like ours within East Anglia.

He will provide us with four days of advice and support in progressing our plans (paid for by the Co-Op).

He agreed that setting up a ‘community benefit society’ would be the best legal structure for what we want to do (in the light of the responses to our questionnaires). He will assist us with the practicalities of doing that (which will take a few weeks). Registration will cost up to £950, which we can afford from the money raised at the parties over the last few months.

Once we have established ourselves as a formal legal entity we can invite people to join as ‘members’ and properly launch our campaign of gathering investment with a view to buying the pub if no-one else comes forward.

Do let us know if you have any comments or suggestions.

We will report on progress and explain how it could work at our next party/meeting, Saturday 12 November at 7.30. All welcome.
